The Old Sugarlands Trail was the original first paved road to Newfound Gap. Before the road was paved it was a wagon road through the center of the Sugarlands Community. A quarry near the trail was used to build the first paved roads over the mountains. The first 1.5 miles are narrow and flat. This trail takes visitors through the old Sugarlands community of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are several rock walls that used to mark garden areas and property lines, etc. At about 1.4 miles in you come upon the Old Civilian Conservation Corp Camp with the old clock tower at the camp parade grounds. This is a wide trail that follows and old mountain road. This trail may close seasonally due to extreme weather or roads that are not accessible. Old Sugarlands Trail passes the remains of an old CCC camp where some abandoned structures can still be found. This trail is well maintained, but can be muddy near the CCC Camp. If you hike this tail from Newfound Gap Road towards the Cherokee Orchard loop road, the incline is a gradual to moderate climb once you pass the CCC Camp. Hiking from...
