This trail is a complete loop of the Mývatn lake. It started from Reykjahlíð village and you can hik or run close to the lake all the time. The lake is at 277 m above sea level. The route’s highest elevation is near Grímsstaðir 308 m above sea level, or 31 m above the lake. The lowest part of the route is near Arnarvatn at the bridge over Laxá, 270 m above sea level, or 7 m lower than the lake. The difference between highest and lowest point is therefore about 38 m. Grjótagjá is a small lava cave near lake Mývatn that has a geo thermal hot spring inside. The cave also has a rich history, Jón Markússon, an infamous outlaw, lived there and used the cave for bathing in the 18th century. It was a popular site for bathing until volcanic activity made the springs far too hot to bathe in during the 1970s, however to this day it remains a very popular site and was featured in Game of Thrones.

Hverfjall (also called Hverfell) is a tuff ring or tephra explosion cone vocano in the east part of Mývatn and part of the Diamond Circle. You can hike to the top of the crater and make a full loop (about 1km). Great views of Mývatn when you're at the top and also the huge lava fields that are close by. There is a parking at the start of the trail.

Hverir is one of the most out-of-this-world sites. It's a geothermal field close to the main road and just a few km from the Mývatn Nature baths. You will discover colorful sulphurous mud springs, (boiling mud), steaming fumaroles. Everything looks like Mars with bare orange-red landscapes. This place is also called Hverarönd and it's part of the Diamond Circle in North Iceland.
