This area was built up when Nike Missile Base was put there during the Cold War. The island is sometimes colloquially called Nike Island, but is also just referred to the Skokie Lagoon Islands. Please note that the southwest part is very overgrown and likely muddy in the spring.

This is a popular paved greenway trail with long stretches of deep woods and beautiful water features along the way. This route is part of the North Branch Trail system and consists of sections of the Blue Trail (unpaved), Chicago Botanic Garden trail, Black Trail, and Red Trail.
