The Bald Mountain Trail is noted for its vistas, blueberries, and wildflowers. Four vistas located at rock promontories along the trail offer panoramic views of the Green Mountain range, Otter Creek and Cold River valleys, as well as Rutland City. The hike has mostly moderate grades with a few steep descents on the West Loop and the end of the East Loop.

Begin by crossing over the impressive Clarendon Gorge. At this point the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail follows a suspension bridge over the Mill River. Before the top of the first big climb, there is a nice overlook with views of the nearby airfield. The trail is mostly wooded and leads to a crossing of Vermont Rt 140. This section of the Long Trail begins at the Clarendon Gorge and continues past other notable points such as the summit of Killington Peak, Maine Junction, Horrid Cliffs, and the Middlebury College Snowbowl before arriving at Brandon Gap. There are several shelters maintained by the Green Mountain Club along the way for backpackers to stay at. The shelters also have a privy and water source nearby.
